October 5, 2011
While “school readiness” and “achievement gap” continue to be a popular headlines in the news, many parents remain unaware of the developmental milestones that help children prepare for school. To arm childcare providers with tips for explaining the importance of these milestones to parents, Childcare Exchange turned to Jacque Sell, CCLC’s Quality Assurance and Training Manager, West.
In her byline article which appears in the current issue, “Ready to Learn: Explaining developmental readiness for kindergarten to parents,” Jacque applies the “crawl before you can walk” approach to explain key abilities young children need to master in order to read and be prepared for learning at school. She also outlines specific ways parents and childcare providers can support children as they learn and grow. Jacque draws on her expertise in early care and education and child development to detail the importance of explaining these milestones. She also offers tips for childcare providers to use when talking about school readiness to parents.
