Welcome! Meet the Team »

Welcome to Kids by the Bay Child Care Center! We are a unique community in San Francisco, which serves Federal employees and the local community. We accept children ages eight weeks- five years old. At our center we believe in the importance of play, and in engaging our children in learning through our Guided Discovery philosophy. We believe in observing what the children are interested in, and then bringing their interests to developmentally appropriate activities. Our curriculum is designed to support the whole child's growth, and as teachers we design an enriched environment in which the child can explore. As the child explores the environment and activities provided, the teacher acts as a guide and asks open-ended questions to encourage the child to think through the process as he or she comes to an conclusion. Every child is a scientist ready to explore, and we are here to help foster their curiosity!

Business Partner Message

Kids by the Bay is located in San Francisco's Federal Building. We like to stay connected to our community through various events throughout the year. During our largest event focusing on children's literacy, we sell thousands of dollars worth of books. These proceeds help grow our center's library and contribute to a charity which donates over 25,000 packages each year, free of charge, to homeless children who need our childhood essentials to feel secure, cozy, ready to learn, and significant.

Upcoming Events

  • April's Learning Focus

Children 6 weeks to 3 years old: Growing Gardens

What better time to explore the beauty and science of flowers and gardens than the spring? Infants’ learning will focus on sensory experiences with different plants and flowers, while toddlers and three-year-olds have the opportunity to learn how to care for plants. We’ll plant seeds in soil, water the plants, observe bugs and discover how they help plants grow, and even plant a butterfly garden outside! We’ll build math skills by counting seeds, learn new vocabulary words related to flowers and plants, and as always, sing songs and read books involving gardens.

Children 4–5 years old: In the Spring + Wild Animals

For children in the Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten Classrooms, April is about exploring all things spring and discovering wild animals! Preschoolers will look for signs of spring outdoors, make mud cakes and count the twigs placed in them, and paint still-life paintings of things related to spring. When our learning turns to wild animals, we’ll learn about the habitats and habits of creatures big and small while maintaining a focus on learning lowercase letters.

The older children in Transitional Kindergarten will focus on project-related work and pick something to work on together. In years past, children have painted a mural, made spring parade floats, painted wild animal masks, and created a model of a wild animal’s habitat. Both of these units focus on expanding the children’s understanding of the natural world around them.

  • May's Learning Focus

Children 6 weeks to 3 years old: Colors and Shapes

Spring fills nature with vibrant colors and interesting shapes, making this the perfect month for the infants, toddlers, and children in Discovery Preschool to explore these concepts. Infants will have a blast as they smash paint in plastic bags and explore blocks with different shapes, while toddlers will practice identifying and sorting different shapes and colors before making their own color-and-shape books! Meanwhile, the children in Discovery Preschool will create rainbow artwork and continue to practice sorting, counting, and matching shapes and colors.

Children 4–5 years old: Insects and Spiders + Water

Some children might find insects and spiders a bit frightening, but this month they’ll discover how cool these tiny critters really are. Children will find out how insects create food for plants, how bees makes honey, why spiders spin webs, and more. After that, children will dive into the world of water! Preschoolers will learn about how water can take three forms (solid, liquid, and gas), children in Pre-K will learn about the importance of keeping water clean and explore the different ways people use water, and our kindergarteners will learn about different water sources and why water conservation is so important.
